The Harbour City
One of Canada's most beautiful harbour cities, Nanaimo is the second largest city on British Columbia's Vancouver Island with a population of over 85,000 people.

Located in the Central southeast section of the island, Nanaimo is considered to be the island's urban center. Only Victoria, located on the island's southern tip, is larger in population.

Nanaimo is made up of what was once five separate Coast Salish villages. The Hudson's Bay trading company made it one of their outposts in the mid-1800s to mine the areas' coal deposits.

The native inhabitants of the region were the Coast Salish peoples. They called themselves "Sneneymexw" which means "great and mighty people". The first white settlers took this word and adapted it today's spelling of Nanaimo.

Today Nanaimo is a thriving city with such variety and diversity found throughout the city. From the largest mall on Vancouver Island to the country-style living in the southend, Nanaimo has it all.
